2019 Mercedes C-Class Petrol Launched with an engine that is low on cubic capacity but makes a lot more power

Following the launch of C-class facelift with two new diesel engines in September earlier this year, Mercedes India has now silently added a petrol variant in the model range. Called C200 progressive, this petrol variant has been launched at Rs 43.46 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Under the hood, the C2000 comes powered by M264 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine putting out max power of 184 PS@5,800-6,100rpm along with 280Nm of max torque delivered at 3,000-4,000rpm.

The petrol engine is equipped with a mild-hybrid system of 48-volt which offers the additional 10PS and 160Nm, taking the total output to 194PS and 440Nm. Mercedes has used this mild hybrid system to mask motor’s initial turbo lag besides providing quick acceleration experience during the gear shifts. The net result is the improvement in the gear shift time for 9-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission to which the new 1.5-liter petrol motor is mated to.

Other benefits of this technology include zero emission coast function and smoother starts for the engine. Mercedes claims that C200 progressive can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 7.9 seconds and is capable of achieving top-speed of 239 kmph. Fuel efficiency figure is equally impressive at 16.3km/l while emissions are pegged at 140 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

In terms of equipment, Mercedes C-Class petrol variant offers a 10.25-inch high resolution COMAND infotainment system, multifunction steering wheel with dual touch pad control, panoramic sunroof, smart phone integration package, active parking assist function, and an ambient light function with staggering choice of 64 colours. Till now, Mercedes Benz has sold more than 30,500 units of C-class in India. In terms of competition, the Mercedes Benz C-class is competing against the likes of BMW 3 series GT, Audi A3 and A4, Jaguar XF, Volvo S90, and Volvo S60 Cross Country among others.
