Bajaj Auto is on a spree of trademarks for new names. This means there are a number of new offerings under development and that’s a good thing. And so, the latest name to be trademarked by the company is ‘Blade’ and could possibly hint at a new electric offering joining the company’s portfolio. More recently, Bajaj trademarked a number of names including Twinner, Pulsar Elan, Pulsar Eleganz, and Freerider. The reason why we think the Blade will be an electric scooter and not a motorcycle is because of Bajaj’s past with the name.
You see, the Bajaj Blade was originally a scooter concept showcased in 2008. The name was trademarked prior too by the Pune-based company way back in 2006. The Bajaj Blade concept previewed a moto-scooter-styled offering with telescopic forks, 12-inch wheels, a step-up style seat, twin headlamps and more. The original pitch for the Blade was that it was a scooter for young men amidst the selective family scooters that you had on sale in the market. The Bajaj Blade was clearly ahead of its time but it was also a time when the company consciously made the decision to concentrate on its motorcycle business and let go of the scooter market altogether.
However, the Bajaj Chetak in the electric avatar marked the resurgence of the company in the scooter segment and more products are being planned. There is a strong possibility then that one of them would be the Blade scooter and with an electric motor instead. Unlike the Chetak that’s more of a family-oriented offering, the Blade could be a performance-oriented scooter rivaling the likes of Ather 450X, Ola S1 Pro and the upcoming Simple One.
There’s no word on the power output or range that we can come to expect from the Bajaj Blade. It will be a while before those details come out and also what the product actually turns out to be. It’s a wait-and-watch game till then.
