Freshly spied images of what could be the Bajaj Sunny test mule have surfaced. The big talking point is that this time the Sunny will be electric in nature. The scooter was a popular choice of people in the 1990s and Bajaj it seems is looking to resurrect its yet another famous nameplate from yesteryears. Bajaj is finally set to ride back on iconic scooter names as asked by the world to do so, but in EV. This could change Bajaj’s position in the market dramatically. Positively ofcourse.
It’s very much apparent that Bajaj has decided to retain the shape of the original model with the test mule featuring a round headlamp, slim floorboards, and trailing arm front suspension system. It also featured a rear grab, a boxy tail lamp, three-spoke wheels, and a large front fender, similar to design elements that were part of the original Sunny. The most logical omission, on the other hand, was the exhaust as electric variants have zero emissions and don’t require a tailpipe.
The test scooter was snapped with a hub motor which indicates that Bajaj might utilise its Yulu platform for the Electric Sunny. Yulus are last-mile connectivity vehicles with a restricted speed of 25 kmph and can be ridden without a driving license. However, Electric Sunny will have a higher top speed and although Bajaj hasn’t revealed the battery’s specification, it would be smaller than the 2.9 kWh that features on Chetak. The performance of the electric Sunny will be modest and it might also become the first electric Bajaj to feature a removable battery.
Bajaj is yet to officially announce anything related to the electric Sunny although the fast-changing business environment in the EV space is becoming increasingly favourable for small, practical, and cost-effective product propositions. Bajaj has successfully resurrected Chetak by bringing its electric variant and looks all set to repeat the same success story with Electric Sunny as well.
