Maruti Suzuki 1.5 Diesel Ciaz vs Hyundai Verna vs Honda City Vs Volkswagen Vento Vs Skoda Rapid – Spec Comparison
Maruti Suzuki has finally developed its in-house built 1.5 litre oil burner. This is a four cylinder powerhouse that makes its debut with the Ciaz and will be further seen in other products from Maruti as well. In addition to this diesel engine also comes matted with a new six speed manual gearbox and the sedan is priced between Rs 9.97 lakh to Rs 11.37 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). With this now the Ciaz replaces the older 1.3 litre diesel unit which was sourced from Fiat. So let’s have an on paper comparison about how the upgraded Maruti Suzuki Ciaz competes with its competitors in the mid sized sedan segment in India (Top end variants).
Dimensions:
Dimensions wise the Ciaz has been offered with the longest wheelbase and it is also the widest of all. In addition to this, the Ciaz is also the longest which provides better cabin space and it also has the largest boot space for the weekend getaways. On the other hand, the Honda City is the tallest of all of them which indeed provides the best in class head room and in terms of bootspace it’s similar to the Ciaz. Apart from the Honda City, the rest of the sedans in the competition run on 195/55-section 16-inch wheels, whereas only the City runs on 185/55-section tyres.
Engine and Transmission:
Now powering the diesel model Ciaz is a 1.5 litre unit that can generate 95 bhp of power and 225Nm of twist, whereas the older 1.3 litre unit used to produce 90 bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. Also as mentioned above the new diesel mill Coles matted with a six speed manual gearbox only and it will miss out on Maruti Suzuki’s mild-hybrid technology which was available on the older engine. On the other hand, the Hyundai Verna has the largest displacement motor of all and it also out shines the other competitors in terms of power and torque figures.
The Honda City on the other hand is powered with a 1.5 litre diesel unit as well but it doesn’t match up with the output of the Ciaz. Both the City and Verna come coupled with a six speed manual gearbox but Verna also gets an optional six speed automatic unit to choose from. Whereas under the hood of both the Volkswagen Vento and the Skoda Rapid is the same and it also produces similar power and torque outputs. Also both the sedans come matted with a five speed manual and seven speed dual clutch automatic transmission as an option.
Talking about fuel economy, the Ciaz here once again takes the lead was it delivers a range of 26.82 kilometers on a litre of fuel. Whereas in the manual transmission range the least fuel efficiency is offered by bthe Skoda Rapid and in terms of an automatic gearbox the Verna has the least fuel efficiency.
Modern technology and Features:
All the sedans in the comparison get standard safety features such as front dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors in all their variants. But in terms of the top spec trims, the Skoda Rapid is available with additional two air bags, whereas both the Hyundai Verna and the Honda City get additional four airbags. All the sedans are equipped with touchscreen infotainment unit which are compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the Rapid and Vento get a 6.5 inch unit whereas the Verna, City and the Ciaz feature a bigger 7.o inch unit. For utmost comfort all the cars get leather seats, automatic geadlamos and AC vents at the rear as well. But the Honda City, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento are one step ahead as they even offer automatic rain sensing wipers. On the other hand, the only the Hyundai Verna and the Honda City featured a sunroof too.
