Mercedes-Benz is expanding its EQ line-up of electric cars and the next model set to arrive will be the EQA, which was spotted testing for the first time. The Mercedes-Benz EQA will be the A-Class limousine’s electric equivalent and could make its global debut by next year.

Mercedes-Benz already has the EQA SUV, so the electric sedan version was only a matter of time. It’ll be the most accessible of all EQ sedans that include the EQE and the flagship EQS. The heavily camouflaged test mule seems to be in the early stages of development and was spotted inside Mercedes’ development centre in Stuttgart, Germany. The test mule looks identical to the A-Class in size and will get the obvious changes to the styling including the closed-off grille and revised bumpers. Expect the A-Class to look like a baby EQS.

The new EQA sedan will be based on the MMA platform, which is starkly different from the bigger platforms and has been specifically developed for compact and midsize electric vehicles. The platform will also support internal combustion engines in the future, so you can expect to see petrol and diesel compact cars coming on this platform for the remainder of the decade.

The new Mercedes-Benz EQA sedan is likely to make its way to India and odds are, the model will be locally assembled here, given the brand’s push for EVs in the country. That should put the EQA sedan in a sweet spot of about Rs. 50 lakh, if and when launched. More details on the EQA sedan will be revealed as the year progresses. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz India recently launched the EQB electric SUV in the country, while the EQE sedan is expected to be its next offering set to go on sale in 2023.
