Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) recently launched the new generation Glanza, which is based on the recently launched new generation Maruti Suzuki Baleno. While retaining most mechanical bits from the latter, the Glanza manages to be distinctive in appearance and that may attract customers to Toyota dealerships. And for those looking at a more frugal option under the Toyota roof, the new Glanza might just be the brand’s first CNG offering. Toyota has listed the Glanza CNG on its website and the launch is likely to take place as early as April this year. It goes without saying that we will hear an announcement from Maruti Suzuki first for the Baleno CNG, which will be the first CNG offering from Nexa showrooms.

The addition of a CNG version should hardly come as a surprise. With fuel prices skyrocketing and electric cars still a while away from being accessible, CNG derivatives seem to be a stop-gap measure for many automakers. Tata Motors introduced the Tigor and Tiago CNG versions recently with a focus towards private buyers, while Maruti too introduced the Celerio and Dzire CNG versions recently that cater to private buyers as well. The Baleno CNG will be specific to private customers as well, and we could see the automaker introduce the CNG version in the mid and top trims to entice buyers. The trade-off will be the compromised boot capacity, something a buyer looking to do more of city runs may be okay to live with.

2022 Toyota Glanza (4)

The new Toyota Glanza CNG will be powered by the same 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine. However, the motor is likely to be detuned to produce about 76PS. On the petrol-powered version, the Glanza produces 89PS while returning a fuel efficiency of 22kmpl. The CNG version is likely to offer a range of about 25-26kmpl. It needs to be seen if Toyota offers it in both manual and AMT versions. Although, it’s likely in the former.

On the feature front, the new Glanza comes with LED headlamps and fog lamps, 16-inch alloy wheels, new dual-tone interior, 9-inch new Smart Playcast, Auto EC IRVM, cruise control, rear AC vents, climate control and more. There’s also a Head-up display, 360-degree view camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and the new ‘Hey Toyota’ voice assistant. Toyota offers a warranty of 3 years/km on the new Glanza with an extended warranty option of 5 years/km. Prices for the Glanza start at Rs. 6.39 lakh (ex-showroom).
