TVS Auto Hybrid Transmission System is not the first time TVS has excelled at providing transmission technology as it has a semi AMT patent also
TVS Motor, the Hosur based motorcycle maker has been a pioneer in terms of technologies since a long time now. To take its technological endeavours further, TVS has just received a patent confirmation by the Chennai Patent Office. This Indian patent pertains to an Automatic Hybrid Transmission or AHT for Two-Wheelers. This system gets it exclusivity patent for its combination of a Fixed Speed Transmission Mechanism (FSTM) and a Continuously Variable Transmission mechanism (CVTM).
With this new AHT, TVS is trying to utilize the best of both worlds of transmission systems. Both CVT and FST have their own plus and negative points and their own operating conditions where they perform most efficiently. The CVT has belts to provide continuous variation in a range of transmission ratios. But, this mechanism suffers frequent belt slips especially at lower speeds and where frequent changes in the acceleration of the rotating members occur. On the other hand, the FST can have one or more fixed transmission ratios, but this limit in transmission ratios means the power delivery through them isn’t smooth. Also, the FST has a better initial acceleration as compared to a CVT one.
However, FST’s have problems at high speeds and constant speed conditions, where the number of desired transmission ratios for attaining maximum speeds and smooth operation. This is where the smart AHT system patented by TVS can make a lot of difference in the way automatic are seen in the real world. This new system can benefit by the combination of CVT and FST to provide better efficiency at all operating speeds.

TVS Motor also explained that the design constraints cannot let a standard CVT two-wheeler be upgraded to an AHT one. This is why there was a need of a transmission system which will enable the FST installation as a retrofit and thus will lead to high transmission efficiency at all operating speeds irrespective of frequent acceleration.
